Use the same core subject description in every prompt and keep the lighting and camera descriptors consistent. For more control, use the --cref (character reference) flag with an image reference. Midjourney v6 handles face consistency significantly better than earlier versions.
For traditional headshots and editorial portraits, 2:3 or 3:4 works best. For square social media use, 1:1. For profile pictures, 1:1 or 4:5. For cinematic portraits, consider 16:9. Specify --ar followed by your ratio at the end of every portrait prompt.
Name your lighting setup explicitly: Rembrandt lighting, split lighting, butterfly lighting, ring light, golden hour backlight. For softer results, add "diffused", "soft box", or "overcast". For dramatic results, add "single key light", "hard shadows", or "chiaroscuro". The more specific the lighting descriptor, the more consistent the result.
Add a specific camera and lens (Canon 85mm f/1.4, Leica 35mm), a film stock for texture (Kodak Portra 400, Fuji 400H), and a photographer whose style you want to reference (Annie Leibovitz, Peter Lindbergh). Combine these with --style raw to reduce Midjourney's default stylization.
Describe specific, unusual features: asymmetrical face, weathered skin, gap teeth, strong brow ridge, freckles. Generic prompts produce averaged, uncanny faces. Also add --style raw to suppress Midjourney's default beauty filter, which tends to smooth and average facial features.
